I haven't really ever been a part of the Harry Potter fandom proper, though I do like the books/movies/world, but I saw Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them today and found I have some things to meta/theorize/speculate.

Contains spoilers for film )

So anyway, there's my thoughts. Other people have probably had similar or entirely different thoughts and that's absolutely fine too. I'm not here to convince anyone of anything, I'm just here to babble. :-)

Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes' Monthly Prompt for June. The prompt was "Anticipation" and due to my misspent early college years, that word takes me directly to only one thing.... (Also where the title comes from.)

Summary: "No," John said to the gold lamé shorts.

I've been watching the DC Legends of Tomorrow series with RL friends on an irregular weekly basis. If anyone is interested in my denial theories about a certain element of the penultimate episode (original air date 5/12/16), I've been bending [livejournal.com profile] shanachie_quill's comment threads with them in her intriguing post regarding a certain character arc in the show's first season.

ETA: Link.

I may have mentioned here before, there is a contest to develop and produce a TV series along the lines of the 80's/90's TV show MacGyver, specifically with a female lead, the intent being deliberate encouragment of female involvement in S.T.E.M. fields through fandom. The original MacGyver series did a heck of a lot to encourage interest in science in a wide range of kids when I was in school, and I don't see how any new iteration of the concept of a hero using brains and knowledge over violence wouldn't have a similar effect today.

An overview of the contest progress so far.

A blog from one of the finalists about the basic intent of the series and her own pitch for it.

Ran across these updates today and it made me grin and go yay when not much has lately, so I had to share.

caffienekitty: (mutual badass support society)
The backstory is here in a prior post.

Four of the five Supernatural eBooks of stolen fanfic this guy was selling have now gone 404, including the one with my story, so thank you all so much for your help and support! \o/

There are still eBooks up by this guy though: one Supernatural, two Game of Thrones, two Vampire Diaries, and one Breaking Bad. If anyone knows fic for these fandoms or can signal boost into those fan spaces, that would be great. The other Amazon seller found to have copied fanfic that is linked in the Tumblr post has had some taken down now as well, but some of it is still up. Please continue boosting the signal to make sure if these are stolen fanfic too (more than likely) that the original writers can know and fight back.

I've just received a PM from someone on fanfiction.net:

ETA: Putting some things to condense space on f-lists.

Subject: STOLEN FIC

Hey!!

I just found our fanfiction on amazon to buy. Someone called Brian Lewis is selling it under the name "Supernatural: Hell Inn".... it is an exact copy of your story. Please go and check it out on .

You are the second person now, he also published other fanfiction!

Please, please, check it out!

The problem is to confirm this I'd need to buy the eBook. It galls me a little to have to give the guy money to find out if he's ripping me and other people off, but primarily (and quite ridiculously) it's not feasible for me to afford the purchase right now. [snip personal details]

The Amazon page does say however that if you have a Kindle and an Amazon Prime account that you can download the ebook for free. Does anyone have this access available and can take a look? He's got a bunch of other ebooks up from Supernatural and several other fandoms (it looks like he posted them all on this past Sunday). If it's the case with this one that the stories are plagiarized, the rest of the ebooks are likely similarly plagiarized, and if so, the word needs to be spread.

It really needs to be confirmed before anyone goes openly accusing this guy publicly online though.

ETA: Further info:

Hey!

Yes, of course. Here are the basic infos:

FANFICTION: When the Fiddler Stops by CaffieneKitty
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3805518/1/When-the-Fiddler-Stops ORIGINAL

(I hope allows now to send links, haven't been on here for a while :D)

It is your story "When the Fiddler stops". I only downloaded the sample, which is two pages, but they are word for word your story. (The person uploaded four other books, which are stolen fan fiction, too, I posted a link on tumblr: sorry if I posted your name, I just wanted to get it out there for the ones I couldn't find... I can erase it from the post if u want of course)

I can make a screencap from the first two pages I have on my phone if u want.

Here is the tumblr page the person PMing me has set up outlining the situation. ETA:Reposted here.

ETA2:SCREENCAPS OF THE EBOOK. (Thanks to xxxkia for posting them)
MY STORY, WHICH I POSTED IN SEPTEMBER 2007

So there's proof.

So it seems this guy and either another guy or a second ID of the same guy has definitely plagiarized a bunch of fanfic writers and is right now making money off their work on Amazon, so spread the word so that other people can find out if this jerk is making money of their fanwork.

If anyone knows what to do about this, that'd be really helpful.
caffienekitty: Road sign directing to Fitton Airfield (cabin pressure)
I posted this over on the comm for the Cabin Pressure radio play, but there has been a cool development since posting which I added to that post but wanted to post again because EEEE!

There is a group on Tumblr that has organized a Cabin Pressure Advent Calendar full series re-listen. They're doing the episodes in original airing order rather than alphabetical, so people doing the re-listen may have differing preferences of order for Series 3. It starts on November 28th with Abu Dhabi and goes one episode per day, leading right up to the two-part finale, which has just officially been confirmed by the BBC to be scheduled to air December 23 and December 24th on BBC Radio4. It will be available internationally live (and almost certainly for a while afterwards) through the BBC Radio iPlayer website.

The Advent calendar people are also going to be posting prompts relating to the episode of the day, so if you are inclined towards writing, drawing, or making stuff related to Cabin Pressure, or viewing what other people have done) give the Cabin Pressure Advent Calendar tumblr a look.

The cool development and EEEE bit is that John Finnemore himself has also just posted a signal boost for the Cabin Pressure Advent Calendar, and has said he'll be posting a tidbit about each episode every day until the finale!! O.O

So, if you are at all interested in Cabin Pressure, there's going to be some activity going on leading up to the finale's airing that you might want to have a look at.

As you probably all know, the Philippines has been whacked recently by what might be the biggest Typhoon in recorded history, with still-mounting human and infrastructure damage. True to form, fandom is again fundraising for disaster relief.

[livejournal.com profile] fandomaid is having a "Buy it now" style fundraiser for Typhoon relief charities. Instead of bidding, the suggested donation is set and whoever claims first and provides proof of the amount being donated to one of a suggested list of charities gets the win. (Remember Canadians, the Federal Government is matching donations for disaster relief up until December 8th, so you can make your donation for the fundraiser and have it get doubled.)

So if you want to help out and you have some cash available to donate, take a browse through the many and varied offerings of fanworks or other things and make a claim. If you're low on cash, consider making an offer of your own for others to peruse and claim, or signal boost and pass the word along. Further details at [livejournal.com profile] fandomaid or at their Tumblr.

I found this while wandering through the local Superstore. It's not officially Sherlock merchandise, but whatever. I think it's awesome.

It's a mug patterned in cable-knit like John's oatmeal jumper! )
Look how well it fits right in with my other vaguely Sherlock stuff! )

I could have bought a lot of jumper-patterned things if I was truly obsessed since there was a similar teapot/cookie jar/creamer/sugar bowl/tumbler/water pitcher/etc in the same display, but I don't need any of those things, also money is not a thing I have much of, also also that much knobbly jumperness in my kitchen would be a little overbearing to face day in and day out, so I just got the mug.

I can now sip tea out of John's jumper! HOORAY! \o/
