caffienekitty: Dean sitting slumped in a chair. "Will kill for coffee" (DW - science awesome)

This is a movie based on the lives of real women in the NASA space program in 1961. And if there was any fairness, the Johnson Space Center would be named after one of them instead of a President.

The only reason I've heard about this movie is because I'm on the NASA press release email list, and the only reason I know it's coming out so soon is because I follow Chris Hadfield on Twitter. I am stunned that I have not heard or seen anything else anywhere about this movie (although I don't get to theatres very often and don't watch enough broadcast TV to see many commercials, so maybe it is being promoted well and I just live under a rock.)

If you are interested in women in STEM, equal rights for women and for people of color, NASA history, spaceflight, math, or learning about people history should have celebrated a lot sooner and a lot louder, this is a movie you will want to see.

(Note: I will also be posting this on my Tumblr page, so those of you following me in both places will see it twice)

50 years since the first episode aired September 8th, 1966, and still boldly going where no one has gone before.

To celebrate, here are two of my favourite upbeat Star Trek fanvids. One from The Original Series and one from Reboot Era.

Allow me to introduce you to the latest video to make me buy a song off iTunes. Covers most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, (including some quick and spoilery bits from Captain America: Civil War and from the Doctor Strange promo material, so tread lightly spoilerphobes). I consider it to be made of badass and particularly enjoy the linking of lyrics with action.

I think this is pretty dang awesome. Of course, I've always liked acapella music and I'm tipping towards being a little obsessed with the new Star Wars movie, so this is my catnip right here.

This group has taken some of the audio from the first Moon landing and made what I consider to be a darn catchy song, as well as a pretty darn nifty tribute.

I recommend anyone who's seen the new Star Wars movie (or even a trailer for it because there's not much in the way of movie spoilers in this) go read this short piece of adorable badassery.

Strong Loyalty Subprogram by wordslinging- Gen, PG, 1074 words
Summary: That time BB-8 saved Poe from space pirates.

I am sooooo late on this recommendation, but really, go see The Martian.

If you like space exploration, MacGyverism, solving problems with duct tape and science, struggles for survival against impossible odds, protagonists keeping themselves sane through snark, team dynamics, believable depictions of NASA of the near future, and just awesome things everywhere, go see The Martian. If it's already left your town, rent it or borrow it from your local library system when it becomes available.

Good movie. DAMN good movie.

Affliction, by Tolakasa.
Gen, Teen, 45k words.

Author Summary: AU of season 5, veering off from canon after the end of 5.04, after Sam and Dean are hunting together again. In a diner one day, Sam notices that something's missing. Something kind of important.

Why I'm reccing it: It is excruciatingly well-written and the characters are all true to the show and in tune even under the circumstances. The story unfolds in a delightfully agonizing way, and it ends where it needs to end rather than anywhere else (don't want to spoil anything!). The central plot reveal caught me 100% flat-footed, but I saw the clues in retrospect, major props for that. It's one of the few things to make me smile, gasp aloud, giggle and drop my jaw in amazement during a horrible week.

If you enjoy reading Supernatural Gen fic, this Season-5-diverging AU has a lot going for it and is well worth a look. An absorbing read.

[livejournal.com profile] ash48 made a video for my [livejournal.com profile] fandomaid donation (which she did very kindly since I think I got in too late to count as winning, but she did it anyway)! I can't watch it yet because I need to watch all of season 9 of Supernatural first and that is gonna take a while! Arg. I'm okay with that though, and [livejournal.com profile] ash48 has been very kindly keeping me updated on progress and warning me that it contains major info on season 9, which was also extremely kind and thoughtful. I look forward to watching the video when I've caught up, but in the meantime, I figured I should let everyone else know about it.

[livejournal.com profile] ash48's post for the vid is over at her LJ. The vid is set to "Lonely Road to Absolution" by Billy Talent, and it's all about Supernatural's Kevin Tran in season 9. She also says it is not a happy vid, but given the song I asked her to make a vid to, that's not too surprising. :-)

(Comments disabled here, go watch it and comment on [livejournal.com profile] ash48's journal to tell her how awesome it is!)
