SPN Reaction: Reaction to 3.12

Reaction to 3.12: Jus in Bello

In this episode, Sam and Dean rescue a bus-load of possibly evil puppies from a vat of lime Jello and whipped cream. With sprinkles of doom and sweet, sweet, emo syrup.

So very totally kidding. I had an attack of spoonerism earlier and got the title re-mapped in my head to "Bus in Jello" and held a poll to commemorate my insanity. Such is my brain at work.

Anyway. I had started a log of what I got spoiled for for this ep, but seriously, damn near everyone in the frigging fandom's seen spoilers for this ep.

-Title: Bus in Jello. Er. Jus in Bello.
-Bela and the Colt, 99% chance of Ruby.
-Sam may appear to be evil.

But repeat of Night Shifter?
-HENRIKSEN'S BACK! Or at the very least, the FBI is back, if the actor was unavailable.

So. Elements in play being Bela, the Colt, possibly Ruby and ?

Bela will likely be the one to tip off Henriksen. Bela's purchaser for the Colt may be Henriksen in a complex ruse to flush out the Winchesters, or is the "power that's rising in the west" (ohpleaseletitbeMeg, ohpleaseletitbeMeg, ohpleaseletitbeMeeeeeeeeeeeg!!!) or will get caught by the FBI (either by being sloppy for dreaded "heart of gold" reasons, or deliberately, so she can use them to waylay Sam and Dean) and grass on them like a field of fresh-mown hay. Also, we'll probably be getting the "No one understood" Bela backstory. Sigh.

One or both boys will be going to jail. As unlikely as it seems, I'll say that Sam's going to try to confess to everything so Dean can live out his year free. I'm... kind of going out on a thin limb in this, but... I suspect there may somehow be an instance of Dean attempting to make Henricksen or other people in a position of authority in society aware of the supernatural world, particularly the demon thing. It's a pet theory. It'll either get support or destroyed in this ep. *clings to theory*

You know, I know some generalities for this ep, but aside from the Henriksen thing, I don't have a lot of specifics, and am doing a lot of theorizing. So despite all the spoilers floating around for this ep, I call that a spoilerphobe win! \o/ Ish! -o- Maybe?

Anyways, we'll see what happens.

To begin:

KRIPKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YOU BASTARD!!! Dammit! There's another side character I have to resurrect through retcon, meta and fic. Crap.

Also, called it. Sort of. Only Reidy was supposed to get possessed and... meh.

-Was expecting a musical montage since this was supposed to be the season finale, to the point that I had warring earworms between 'Renegade' and 'Carry On' all freaking day.

-Monument Colorado. And it is so very obvious Bela's set them up.

-Wigs, hee.

-Somehow, answering the phone in a place you're breaking into seems like a bad idea.

-Bela, in the car with the Colt, and apparently Michael Rosenbaum's monogrammed hanky. I had a brief worry that MR stood for the name of Meg's human host, but her last name was Masters. I sense a connection to the still unknown backstory. Sigh. Can't she just be a condescending amoral thief because she likes money?

-"Sweetie!" Hee.

-The CW really needs to learn that sometimes a surprise guest shouldn't be announced loudly. Sigh. But OMGYAY HENRIKSEN!

-I have so much love for Dean's head thunking loudly on the floor. Aw.

-"Hannibal Lector and his halfwit little brother" Hee. Someone doesn't have a high opinion of Sammy.

-That secretary was truly freaky. I was swearing up and down she'd turn out to be evil or something. She's awfully cute.

-Sam and Dean jerking each other's chains, hee.

-Soon as the other FBI guy closed the door? Yeah, demon. Lillith seems a bit more organized in who she gets her flunkies to possess, though no wiser about how and when to expend them.

-Bastard shot Dean. In the same shoulder evil!Sammy Meg did. Hm. Damn it, I still want Meg to turn up again! Although if she ever does show up again, Kripke will kill her off. Sigh.

-SAM'S MEMORIZED THE EXORCISM!!! YES!!! Crap. There's something else pre-Kripke'd. Or not. *ponders*

-Loooooots of throat-slitting going on down around that there helicopter.... *looks around for Meg again*

-I was hoping Reidy would get possessed here and bring one of my Season 3 predictions completely true. Poor Reidy.

-Nice touch how all the shots of the boys in the cell together keep them visually separated with a cell bar.

-Speaking of predictions coming true... Dean (and Sam) try to convince figure in authority that this stuff is real. Check.

-Boys doing first aid on each other! Yay!

-"I think it's 'coz we're so awesome." \o/

-I figured Nancy was totally a demon when she was bringing over the towel, because what other reason would she have to stick her entire arm into a cell with the FBI's most wanted.

-Sam's rosary snag faked me out too. Yay sneaky yet obvious Sammy!

-HENRIKSON'S POSSESSED!!! Okay, that works too. *nods*

-OMG!!! HOLY SWIRLIE!!!! *helpless with laughter* I may need an icon. I have no idea when I'd use it, but I may need an icon of that.

-"I shot the sheriff."/"But you didn't shoot the deputy." How often does an opening like that come up in life. Seriously. You have to jump on it when you can.

-*warning, contains reference to Joseph Campbell hero cycle stuff, skip if you don't like Campbell* It does annoy me that the meta I never fully posted anywhere about Dean having a hero cycle of his own to counter and interconnect with Sam's more blatant one was almost solidly proven. If it had been Dean alone that convinced Henriksen and Henriksen had gone on to help rouse the mundane authorities somehow? That would have done it. See, I've always thought of a hero cycle for Dean being less obvious, because in essence, he starts in the world of the unnatural and gets drawn into the mundane through encounters with the law and so forth, and that part of Dean's ungiven 'quest' thing was to get the mundane authorities aware of the demon invasion thing, to supplement the very few hunters there are trying to stop this. It could still happen; maybe Henriksen was Dean's gate guardian and he's still just starting the quest. *End Campbellian meta-age*

-Crap that went long. Sorry. Who knows now because Henriksen fell on pie and DAMN YOU KRIPKE for making me like Henriksen and then killing him. Jerk.

-Yay for Key of Solomon graffiti with orange road-tagging spray bombs!

-Damn, Nancy is cute as hell. I like that Dean's radar seems to be working and he's not hitting on her.

-Blueprints! \o/

-We have that exact roadsalt at the office! *squee*

-Aw, Impala in the impound lot. Hee, I thought Dean was grabbing the dreamcatcher for a second there. Heh.

-Love the massive demon cloud smoke effect, way coolness. Also the wind. Oh and OMG RUN DEAN!!!

-And here is where, in my squee book I have half a page filled with the words (EFF) YOU COMMERCIALS!!! I don't know what kind of ads or promos they had on the CW, but CityTV had the stupidest commercial for their new block of reality show crap, twice every single commercial break, that start by calling reruns rotten.

-I kind of almost wish they had played with the 'someone comes back in, are they possessed' trope with Dean, but it's a weensy bit too soon after "Dream a Little Dream" and then the awesome thing happened...

-OMG BEST REVEAL EVER!!! I had absolutely no hint they were gonna do this, and I frigging shrieked! Anti-possession tattoos are something that's been batted around fandom frequently and YES!!! And cool! Plus they kind of look AWESOME, and I'm not even a tatt girl, really! And now I'm trying to remember the last time we saw Sam or Dean's bare upper chest... Memory failing. Arg. Still, coolness!!!!! EEEE!

-Dean and Henriksen bonding and info swapping. Aw. Henriksen implying he'd like to go Hunter. Aw. Henriksen's so very obviously gonna die. Dammit! *kicks things*

-Also, salt shell bandolier? Made of win.

-Dean's face when Ruby shows up? That eyeroll? Yeah that. I want that bottled.

-Lillith... hm. *repressing urge to wail 'but it's gotta be Meeeeeeeeeeeeeg!!!1!'*

-Answer me this. If Sam and Dean still had the Colt, what difference would it make versus 30 demons? Yeah, they seem to be able to replace bullets, but it's not like they have bullet casting facilities in the podunk town cop shop. Ruby is either aware they don't have the gun and deliberately picking it as a topic to fight about so she can suggest her plan and try to push Sam into accepting Nancy being sacrificed *nudge nudge into the dark side* or she truly is a moron.

-"I got virtue!" Aw, Dean.

-Virgin, eh? Okay. *shrug*

-I love how boggled and astonished Dean is by the concept of a person his age who's chosen not to have sex. *pats him*

-Dean's plan before the commercial break sounds very tactically inadvisable, but details are important in these things. And then his plan works!!! \o/ (Shut up Ruby)

-Ruby deserts her chosen liege (or whatever) in the heat of combat, saying "I bet on the wrong horse". Nice. That's high treason there, Demon!King Sammy, in case you need a reason to tell her to shove off later. Just saying.

-Why did they even let her go if she's just said she's decided she picked the wrong side and- oh just arg. This is harshing my squee. Pass.

-For a trained FBI guy, Henriksen standing right in front of the door, that close? Really idiotic.

-Henriksen and Dean doing the cooperative gunfighting thing? YAY!!!!

-I love that all through this, Jensen Ackles is remembering to favour his left shoulder. *glee*

-Where's the Deputy and Nancy. Oh on the roof.... uh.... okay *handwaves logic into that somehow*

-Obligatory sex joke wasn't as bad as it might have been.

-First time around I missed seeing the one who escaped because I was going "Eh? Why didn't he attack?" But now I see he was off to report to his boss, which took priority over mangling a person.

-Mass freakin' exorcism by PA system FTW! Hee. That was awesome. They need to put speakers on the outside of the Impala and carry that tape with them now.

-Interesting how a collection of demons trapped and being exorcised looks a lot like a fire by the Ceiling Demon YED? Hm.

-Henriksen made that report to his boss about Sam and Dean being killed in the chopper before Lillith showed up. Guess the FBI would rather have them be reported as dying in the general explosion than having the integrity of it's helicopters called into question.

-Lillith being a pre-adolescent girl? Hee! Grey/White eyed Demon? Who seems to do a kind of nuclear attack from the lighting. Interesting. Maybe Meg upgraded and... *sigh* It's an obsession, I know. Anyway, Interesting development. (Would have been way more interesting if it had been Meg)

-Also: "One's really tall and one's cute." Soooomeone's a Deeeeeangirl! \o/

-And the police station goes foom and Henriksen DIES, Kripke you bastard, and that's the end of the episode.

-What, Ruby? Didn't see her. There was this whining noise...

-Oh fine, whatever. Ruby shows up and harangues the boys with impunity, even though she abandoned them in a combat situation. I liked Ruby at one point. I did. Then I didn't like her. Now, as a character, adversarial or not, I really, really hate her, and want her to go away and never return for reasons I'm not going to go into just now. She's harshing my frigging squee enough as it is.

-So, since the potential of a spoilery promo was pretty much impossible at the end of the ep, what did the CW do for the remaining five to ten minutes of airtime? Did they at least advertise a date for new episodes?

"One's really tall and one's cute." Soooomeone's a Deeeeeangirl! \o/

Actually she said "and one's really cute." so, Deangirl to the max!!!

I'm on your Meg bandwagon. I'm sure we can rustle up our own army of fangirls and lay siege on the Kripker and have him ret-con his "mistake" in the remaining episodes *nods*

So many lines that made me squeal... bondage visual/verbal jokes! \o/

"then we're no better than them" + "don't want to win this way" OH DEAN

Sekrit magik tattoos!!!! FTW YAY!

ps as an analogy, Bus in Jello actually works, because Sam and Dean are trapped with a bunch of people and they're trying to rescue them... *reaching*

all I am going to say about this episode for the fear of squeeing to much; Im sooo very happy this one got switched to last based on my reaction to last week's episode. *grins*

and man, last week it was "Heat of the Moment," this week it's "I shot the Sheriff" stuck in my head. hahaha oh well, i'll get to chuckle quietly for a while over that one.

[identity profile] sugar-bumbee.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Would the CW actually do something as intelligent and promotional as advertise the date of the next new episode right after the amazing one that just aired ends? *sigh* They did not. Local news popped right up.

*pats* It's okay, Meg could still show up. She's AWESOME and she knows better than to corner the Winchester's like that. She's off somewhere scheming and will sneak in under the radar and BLOW THINGS UP. Heh.

Dean's awe at encountering a real, live virgin was DELIGHTFUL. *smishes him*

Henrickson. <3 --DAMN YOU KRIPKE.--

[identity profile] spndpfrdcrck.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been spoiled about tattoos forever but OMG EEE AWESOME. They should have shown them longer..aka...have them fighting shirtless

Lilith is creepy...but I wanted it to be Meg too. They have to bring her back sometime! We know she's out there.

Dean's surprise at Nancy being a virgin *facepalm* That's all I can say is *facepalm* Seriously...just cuz some people don't want to get laid by random strangers every night

They aired absolutely nothing about Supernatural afterward. I think they showed something for..One Tree Hill? Maybe? I dunno I wasn't paying attention I was being sad about Henny and Nancy and then being sad about having to start the 62 day wait.

I would say more but I'm running late for work

[identity profile] malevolent73.livejournal.com 2008-02-22 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I was spoiled for cops catching them because that was the first thing they showed in the preview last week for this week and I couldn't turn the channel fast enough. :( Also, the tattoo picture I saw before Malleus, and have been waiting for it to finally show up onscreen. Wow, long damn wait!

I think I blocked Bela's screentime. Was she even in this episode? All the edge of my seat stuff that happened in the middle and end kind of purged her from my brain. Yay! Also, I am SO annoyed at Hendrickson being killed. That is my biggest peeve at the moment. Kripke doesn't seem to be aware of who we wouldn't mind as secondary characters long term, he kills off people from their past (Caleb, Pastor Jim), he killed off the Srage from Croatoan, and now Hendrickson. I sure as hell hope Ellen shows up in at least one of the next 4 but then I fear for her life if she does.

Otherwise, LOVED the episode. I really was all, "Gasp! Oh know! OMG! Thank goodness. Oh crap!" the whole time. LOL

Aw, see? That might have actually been cool. Too bad Kripke never gave that any thought. [/bitter] We can still wank it though, and write lots of fic about it!! ;-)

Yay! It looks like there were some good squee-points here. I love Henriksen to pieces, but **kicks Kripke** you just knew he wasn't going to last he ep. At least they've been really consistent about killing the cool characters and keeping the dreck.

I will probably do a marathon of S3 eventually and I'll watch this then.

[identity profile] angieb5.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
I totally thought Nancy was going to be possessed too.

And I agree I don't know what good the colt would have done besides kill 30 humans as well as demons.

So... you like Meg, then?

[identity profile] spndpfrdcrck.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
It is unfortunate, but it makes sense now why Sam didn't take off his shirt in Mystery Spot when he was extracting the bullet. Make-up didn't wanna bother with applying the tattoo. *sigh* Oh well. I can survive with short sleeves!

[identity profile] wynterwolf47.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
I still hold out hope that it might happen in some way

Heh, and you know the worst part? Kripke still totally could do that... any minute now. ;-) But from Kripke's interviews, it's pretty clear he believes Dean just being Sam's brother is enough. And in the standalones, it totally is enough because in those, Sam is just Dean's brother too and it's awesome. But I have been waiting since Home for Dean to have some question or mystery or something that was about him, or to have the boys become integrated together in the arc stuff and 2 years is just too long to wait. And that's another issue I have with it... there just isn't enough meat in the details of Kripke's plot to drag it out for this long. Mary said she was sorry to Sam half way through S1 and we still don't have even a sniff of a clue what the hell she was talking about and I soooo wasn't going to bring my pissines into your journal. Erm... sorry? **eeep**

Anyway, I do think you're right and that this season will not only look better in retrospect, but it will also work better as a marathon because then the thinness of the plot won't matter as much and I think the girls won't feel so intrusive either.

[identity profile] cosmicviolet.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
They need to put speakers on the outside of the Impala and carry that tape with them now.
Ha, I know, right?

[identity profile] anniehow.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever seen the original Blob? I got the dvd for maybe three euros, and I love it! Nothing does cheese like fifties horror flick. In fact, the dvd claims that it was The first cheesy horror flick that spawed all the rest.

Jello can be blamed for almost anything.

[identity profile] spndpfrdcrck.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah....damn it we're never gonna see them shirtless again.

[identity profile] sadelyrate.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
And now I'm trying to remember the last time we saw Sam or Dean's bare upper chest-

Not before Heart (2x17), certainly, because Sam's chest is smooth and inkless. And not before The Magnificent Seven (3x01), either, because the fandom would've flipped if there'd been ink visible under Dean's top in the beginning. Otherwise I can't remember any instance of bare-chestedness.
Though if they'll ever give us any indication on when the boys got the tats, I guess they'll be ignoring such troublesome details as visual canon proof...

Agreeing with you about Ruby. I gave her the benefit of doubt, but I'm not sure whether it's the character with the PMS or the actress...
