A little bit of analysis regarding fanvids.

Due to a conversation over in the comment thread for [livejournal.com profile] lsketch42's awesome fanvid In Dreams, I've made the following personal marketting analysis.

I took all the songs I've legitimately purchased due to fanvids, (either because they were used in a fanvid, or because I've liked other songs used in fanvids by the same artist, or because iTunes' little built-in crack-dealer 'recommendations based on contents of cart' thingy recommended them as an artist similar to a song being purchased that I'd first heard on a fanvid,) and combined them into one playlist. It includes entire CD's of songs I've bought by artists I would never have otherwise tried out, or never have heard of. It includes at least one song that's only available via the group or artist's personal website.

This is the result:
142 songs, 8.3 hours, 712 MB

8.3 hours of music.

This does not include any of the music I've bought because of the show itself (which is a way scarier number. Supernatural is what made me sign up for iTunes in the first place. o.O). This is just the stuff purchased based on songs I've heard in fanvids. This represents over $130.00 worth of music purchases (probably more due to the extra iTunes Plus charge that's being applied as the songs change to DRM-free) I would not have made if I had not heard a song first used in a fanvid.

(For comparison, due to hearing them on official professionally produced and publicly aired music videos, I've purchased only nine songs.)

So, thank you so much to the fanvidders out there for the fantastic videos and the introduction to some really great music. :-D

I have to second this. I have been introduced to some great songs/bands because of fanvids and my Itunes playlist has really taken a turn- for the better. I used to be one of those people who just liked 'whatever's on the radio'. Now I detest most radio and listen to a wide variety of stuff!

It's funny you posted this, 'cause I just pimped a few fanvids over on my LJ last night (none of them are mine, just ones that are really good and have songs that I now love).

I do the same thing! Well I don't have itunes per se, but still. Darn people for being so talented at making vids that it makes me want to download every song I come across in them!! Haaha! And I saw that video too, with the Enya song... WOO! So good!

Holy crap woman O.O

lol. That's awesome though.

You know...I wonder if everyone on LJ did this, and we came up with a giant total for songs purchased from fanvids if the music companies would finally just leave us the hell alone and put us under fair use.

Oh yeah, check them out anytime. :-)

And, "Hi" by the way. I think I friended you a while back, but never said hello (bad me).

I totally agree and share the same experience

Add my name to the "Me too" pile. I've started listening to bands and artists that not only had I not tried, but that I hadn't even heard of!

To music companies: Get a friggin clue!
