Really? For real, really? Huh. I'm amazed, really. It's got enough natural liquids in it, plus if you add a splash of watch to keep it from getting too dried out or limp when cooking it in the microwave. Then again, I have to admit I have a pretty cool feature on my nuker that specially cooks both hard or soft veggies. Good great for preventing disasters from happening.
I hope your microwave survived. Obviously the broccholi didn't.
Water. Yeah. Adding water would have helped. Also cooking it for less than 12 minutes, which is what the 'carosel microwave cookbook' from the early eighties said. What little survived outside the black parts was kind of limp, crunchy and brown simultaneously, which I didn't think was possible either.
Wait, WHAT!?!? I mean, I'm a total loser in the kitchen and even I am hard pressed to screw up broccoli! What the hell happened?!?!?!
...oh, oh god, I just read your comment. Yeah. 12 minutes, you say? I can see how that wouldn't end well. *wince* Actually, in a covered (vented) bowl, just a minute on two is usually enough to get a bright green light steaming (I like 'em just barely past raw).
(I am amused also because I made myself steamed broccoli last night. I was craving it, along with Chicken McNuggets and fries. ALL TOGETHER. O_o)
I just..you do things with cooking that defy logic--you should harnass this power, truly;) I hope you had something to eat in there that wasn't black, unless it was cajun.
The weirdest part of this to me is that I made broccoli for dinner tonight also, although I boiled it in a pot on the stove. *eerie* And you learned better for next time, yes? :D
Usually I steam it, but I wasn't sure where the steamer basket was and it seemed like too much of a production for that time of day to haul all the cookware out and so forth. Silly me.
I managed to salvage bits. It was kind of interesting, because in spots it was like broccoli chips (crispy and singed) and in other spots it was limp and mushy. Not something I'd try deliberately no. Next time I'll find the steamer basket and do it on the stove like normal.
You are that kind of person that manages to let water burn, aren't you?
Well, last weekend I set a pot of water on to boil and forgot to put in the water, does that count? The pot was making angry ticking noises and the fire alarm went off and everything.
I say a pox on that book, and microwaves are evil tools--which is why I usually just use them for reheating, or popcorn(which doesn't burn most of the time:P)
And for exactly this reason. Wee!Dean is convinced by school health information that Sam needs green, leafy vegetables, but it all goes horribly wrong and he swears off vegetables for life.
It's funny you should mention crispy broccoli chips. I made brussel sprouts tonight. Cut them in half. Tossed them in olive oil and salt and pepper then threw them in the oven for 15mins on 450 or so. They got kind of crispy and a little singed and were pretty good! It turns out crispy, singed veggies are not too bad!

If your microwave is a bit smelly now (and the stuff you put in comeshalf a minute, it normally works quite well :)

I even read it out of a cookbook! I guess microwaves have gotten a lot more efficient since the early eighties.

Sounds like a good combo actually. :-)
