Disaster Kitchen: Oops.

And the first Disaster Kitchen victim of 2016 is...

The tea kettle.

What it's supposed to look like (and still does on one side):

Disaster Kitchen Kettle - 1

What it looks like now (on the other side):

Disaster Kitchen Kettle - 2

It still holds water, but the bottom metal layers have debonded so the copper outer layer is now quite... ripply... over the steel, and it doesn't sit quite right on the burner. It had a bit of that from previous oopses, but it's more prominent now.

Not quite sure exactly how I did it, but it involved forgetting about trying to make tea and possibly something under the burner that didn't really catch fire so much as turn to smoke and ash. I have also confirmed that the smoke alarm in this apartment doesn't do a damn thing.

Sounds like you need a kettle like mine. Plugs into the wall and turns off when it's hot.

You might be. I spent so many years having water made in microwaves (*gasp horrors*) for various reasons that anything NOT boiled in them tastes awesome to me. Huh now I'll have to look and see if mine has the element in the water.

I feel like mine wasn't that expensive? But since it was a gift, I don't know.

*nods* I can understand that. Oh that's good that it cleaned up somewhat!

Oh dear. Must be something in the winds, since ours died this week too (had an old backup to put on the stove, but still).
