Pluvial Pursuit
-.-

Being the stout, well-traveled army mouse that he was, Dawson had been in many boats in his years, but none so small and frenetic.

“Lean right, Dawson!” Basil called madly.

Dawson dutifully lurched to the right, gripping tight to the fishing net that remained attached to the wooden float.

“Blast! He’s still outpacing us!”

Squinting through darkness and noisome splashed muck, Dawson could see nothing past his own whiskers except Basil’s brightly manic eyes.

“How can you even see him, Basil?” Dawson called out.

Basil, however, was muttering. “It’s the River Fleet in full storm flood, we should be faster than-” he looked at Dawson, and broke into an unholy grin.

Oh blast it, I’m ballast. “Wait! I can jump off when we’re next near the side of-”

Basil flipped out his folding knife. Dr David Q Dawson had not squeaked since childhood and he most certainly didn’t now.

“Dawson, grab the float itself! This netting is slowing us down!”

Not hesitating, Dawson gained a firm grip on the wood of the float as Basil sawed the remaining rope strands away.

Immediately the float sped up, but it also began spinning. The netting had evidently provided a rudder of sorts. Dawson abandoned his dignity and clung to the spinning float with all four paws.

“Ah ha! Now we’ll overtake him, old chap!”

Shutting his eyes against the filthy water and whirling dizziness, Dawson sent up a brief yet sincere appeal to the gods as Basil’s deranged cackling echoed through the sewer.
