SPN Stuff: Random thought on Bobby

...of whom I need to make an icon, apparently. *adds to list of things to do today*

I have gone insane. I haven't stopped randomly squeeing and going into flail spasms and breaking into little dances and laughing maniacally at the ceiling (I really hope my unit is soundproof, or the elderly lady upstairs may be getting alarmed) since "Born Under a Bad Sign" and I haven't even had a chance to re-watch it yet.

So today, I'm walking down my five-step-long 'hallway' after reading big-pink's squeeage about Jim Beaver (Bobby) and having this thought process:


Step one - Yeah, Bobby is kind of the last safe place they've got since the Roadhouse is full of potentially adversarial hunters and an as yet undefined leak to Gordon, who even though Gordon's in jail, obviously doesn't have the best interests of the Winchesters at heart.

Second step - And he knows about Possessed!Sam taking out the other hunter guy (Steve?) but is willing to protect the boys, and is kind of an expert on all the demonic possession stuff. He gave them those charms.

Third step - But he had a very unsettling look on his face after they left, like maybe the charms don't do exactly what he says they do. Hm. I bet he knows about Sam. I bet he's known for a while.

Fourth step - So, maybe the charms do protect against possession, but maybe they do something else as well, something that will either work against whatever's going on with Sam, or... or...

Step five - (looking up at the smoke alarm in my ceiling) ...it's some kind of evil-detecting alarm. If something starts happening with Sam or Dean, and Sam starts to 'turn', or the Demon gets control of either of them, or whatever, maybe it's something that will go off and let Bobby know about it... somehow. Because maybe Bobby knows that right now Sam's okay, and Dean's okay, but there's a point of no return that neither of them can be allowed to pass, and if that happens, it would be better if they are brought in by a friend than a stranger.


And that's when I burst out cackling evilly at the ceiling. Really, I don't know why because the thought of Bobby at that moment starting to steel himself to do some kind of "Old Yeller" takedown on one of the boys if it became necessary in the future is hardly laughable. It's rather ouch-riffic, actually.

Also, I either think fast or walk slow, because my 'hall' is not that long.

Man, that parting look from Bobby *was* a little telling. Of what, i have *no* idea. But i worry for him.

I love how he treats Sam and Dean as equals *and* as the boys he's known all their lives, you know? He's just...

Oh, absolutely. He's wonderfully avuncular, and very very pragmatic, and I love the way there hasn't ever really been a "How the boys know him" scene, he's just there, he's always been there why would he need to be explained. It's awesome!

Yes, a very unsettling look. I was all WTF about the charms because SERIOUSLY, wouldn't every hunter have one by now? What, they've just invented them now!? But I've gone on about that at length elsewhere. Suffice to say, there may be more to it, and you've postulated something very interesting. Old Yeller indeed.

Those charms rang a very off-tone bell for me for that reason too. Something like that would be ubiquitous in the hunting world, unless it was very rare or hard to make, and Bobby's "oh by the way here" kind of casualness about them didn't lend that type of weight to them. So something is up somewhere.

Yeah, I wondered about that last look from Bobby too, and the reason is that was actually similar to the rather searching look he shared with Dean in Devil's Trap too. I'm getting the sense Bobby knows more than he's letting on. Which is great.

Seemed to me there was a kind of unsettling change of expression on Bobby at the end of Devil's Trap too. I've got to leave for work ASAP or I'd go back and check it out. Bobby definitely has "I know something dire, but I'm not telling you." subtext going on. It's awesome.
