Theory for something in SPN 4.01
One last bit of theory for tonight, and then I'll stop spamming y'all
That red eyes flashback thing Dean has a couple times in 4.01? Listen to the noise. Sounds like combat, right? People screaming? Dean's eyes looking around? Like watching motion, things moving quickly around him.
I have the BIGGEST feeling that part of the reason Dean doesn't remember hell is that it wasn't just Castiel who went to get him. There was, like an angel strike team or something, and there was a big Angels vs Demons smackdown to get Dean out and Castiel is the only survivor. And right now, Dean can on no level accept that a) angels exist and b) angels died to free him from Hell.

THIS SEASON IS GOING TO FRIGGING ROCK!!!!!

I just went with the assumption that Hell *is* people screaming. (Various demons have yammered on to Dean about the screaming.) Sera said something about the place we saw in 3.16 just being Hell's waiting room, because they couldn't afford to show Hell itself. So maybe the *real* Hell is screaming and chaos, and not empty-ish and silent like the place we saw.
Really? I kinda think Kripke's gonna start saving coins out of his couch cushions so in the big, big, BIG epic finale he no doubt has in his 12 year old brain - there'll be the smackdown you're talking about. 'Cause all the stuff he loves to steal from has the big epic battle at the end.
I'm also thinking the Big Finale is gonna come back to John's words: "You have to save Sam, or kill him." The thought that's stuck in my brain now is that the ending Kripke has locked away involves Dean actually killing Sam to save him. Which would just be...not what we want, wouldn't it?

There's so much stuff that can be done with almost no budget that will still make the epic really work.
I think that all through the series, there's been the theme of family being a source of strength even against the darkest things out there. I think it's going to look very like a 'Dean's gotta kill Sam' or a mutual annihilation situation, but at the last minute or close to, that's going to change because of what Dean said at the end of last season about cycles of martyrdom and letting the demons call the tune. This is another part of the cycle, spiraling down to the end, but somehow, strength of family is going to get them clear of the supposedly inevitable end, no matter who's calling the tune at that point.
It's going to be an utter emotional grind getting to there, but it's all been foreshadowed all along, and I know Kripke reads Joseph Campbell, and... and... I have to get sleep because my brain will not stop leaking scrambled meta into every comment I type, dammit!

I swear, if there was a way to contribute to the show's budget (and I had money) I'd do it. I feel like kicking Dawn Ostroff every time I think about the budget. :-/
