*hiding from Doctor Who spoilers*
Spoilers for future developments in Doctor Who I didn't want to know about and why under cut. Contains spoilers most of the world already knows.
Okay. I had been in moderately successful denial that Tennant is leaving after his contract's up. Today they picked someone new to play the Doctor. I don't want to know who. Really, I don't much care, as long as it's not Russell Brand.
I have been trying to push the casting news for the show out of my head because knowing that Tennant is leaving removes all the suspense from any peril the Doctor's going to be in for the last few outings. I know he's going to regenerate, in the last one, probably near the end. I know it's coming. Suspense and tension goes poof.
Now for the other reason Tennant leaving is distressing me.
I love David Tennant's Doctor. I have been watching Doctor Who for nearly twenty years (in repeats) and had always considered Tom Baker to be "my Doctor". Then briefly Paul McGann because that cracky little outing was the first new Doctor Who in years, but I slid back to TomDoc. Then along came the new series. I liked Nine, but not enough to swap allegiances.
Then along came Tennant.
David Tennant's take on the Doctor has been... I don't know if I can explain this. His Doctor has been the Doctor I've known in my head since I started getting into the show. I know opinions vary on his portrayal but this is my head and my opinion. Tom Baker and all the rest did wonderful jobs, but somewhere around the start of series 3 I realized that, for me, Tennant had replaced all of them. Like the rest were just placeholders until the real Doctor came along.
Ten is my Doctor. And knowing Tennant's leaving the series feels like my Doctor's come down with a fatal, incurable disease.
I know it's absolutely ludicrous for this to be depressing the hell out of me but it is.
That said, I haven't seen the 2008 Christmas special yet, and I don't want to know anything about anything related to Doctor Who occurring or influencing any episodes or specials past 4X13. I wish I didn't know what I do know. :-P

Arg! Sorry you got spoiled, they pop up in the most unexpected places. Also... Neil Gaiman's a Doctor Who fan? :-D
I don't want spoilers, cause I already know I'm going to cry when he regenerates.
I still don't even want to think about it. If I hadn't known the fake-out regen sequence was coming at the end of season 4 due to being accidentally spoiled, and had the second part available to watch right away, I may have gone very very badly insane. :-P

collecting spoilers
(Anonymous) 2009-01-05 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)So as you know, Lurking Wombat here collects Dr. Who spoilers like spiders collect flies. That being said...how are you doing? Want this white stuff to be gone now!! How are things there? Reading some stuff that is not normally on my radar here. Non-Fic book about a lion and read one about an elephant a few weeks ago.
Hope the week goes well for you and can't wait to get together at some point.
Hugs

Re: collecting spoilers
Yes, yes. Also ew. Also also, I should e-mail you the list of what I already think I know about the 2008 Christmas special, so you can laugh if I'm wrong. ;-P

There is some green showing through now. Things are horrendously busy; it's started again for the year, I think, and won't slow down again (in theory) until July. :-/

Cool. Last actual book I read was "Dark is Rising" and before that...
...um...
...I really need some time off. :-(

At some point for sure. E-mail me!
