That worked better than expected...

This first shirt was originally a kind of periwinkle color, but got oil stains on it from the photocopier at work, so instead of relegating it to the "Don't wear in public" category, I dyed it.




This one was a plain white t-shirt I had that I figured since I had the dye going I may as well dye it too.



Now I have two shirts passable to wear in public, and my hands, bathtub, walls and washing machine are not dyed blue, which is a moderate improvement over the last time I tried this. :-)


Left un-locked for the Lurkers, who I will leave the punnery to. Mostly.

I've never dyed my hair, but I intend to dye it flaming red when I turn 40, Or sooner if the grey gets overwhelming.

I had to make some kind of dye-related pun! I wore one of them to work today and told everyone I'd 'dyed' over the weekend, and then flashed them my shirt. :-D

It's really simple to do, you just need some dye frm the dollar store, a bucket with a lid that you don't mind getting stained, and some kind of mostly cotton or natural fibre based garment.

Make the dye in the bucket according to package instructions, soak the garment in warm water and wring out, squash, twist or fold the garment in interesting ways (don't tie it unless you want the typical 'tie-dye' patterns to emerge), sink it completely in the bucket of dye, put on the lid and leave it sit for about 8 hours. You might need to wiggle the bucket if the garment is wound really tight, to loosen it a little and allow the dye to seep into the deeper layers, but do not stir. Once the time's up and the dark parts of the garment look darker than you want them to be, dump out the dye and rinse well in cold water, then run on it's own through a couple cold water washes (without soap) It'll tend to bleed a bit for a few washes afterward, so wash with stuff that colour bleed won't effect. These shirt will get washed with my jeans.

The top one is especially appealing- softer swirls of dye. They look very nice!

The top one was originally a soft lavender/periwinkle colour, so it isn't as high contrast as the bottom one. Also, it was a wad-and-scrunch, and the bottom one was a twist-and-wrap, so the dye patterns are more linear on the bottom one and more diffuse and randomised on the top.
