Reaction: Supernatural 6.02 and picspam

I'm in the middle of yet another $@^$*& multiple-day screaming headache, (just in time for the weekend, yay) so apologies for the shortness and muddledness of reaction post.

Contains profanity and speculation.

Spoiler Summary

I didn't duck in time to miss an unexpected promo. Monster babies. Or baby monsters. Which may or may not kick Dean's ass, depending on the camera angle and the way the commercial is cut. If they do, I may never ever stop laughing.

Also, a digital TV box is okay (even though it turned out I didn't need one after all, but hey, I get National Geographic and Teletoon Retro now so all is well), but this 'show you the title and entire TV guide summary while programming the recording' thing is horribly spoilerrific. Grandpa and the Cousins want to keep the baby monster/monster baby and raise it as a hunter. Somehow, I don't think that's gonna happen. And of course the title; "Two and a Half Men." ...seriously? That show gives me hives.

Onward.

Picspam Reaction, with speculation and randomness for Supernatural 6.02 - Two and a Half Men *scratches and mutters*

Well! Isn't that interesting!

-Hi shifters randomly appearing in the recap! So, shifter babies. Or a shifter that makes itself look like a baby. Wild. Well, I guess it's a sort of progression. Pre-adolescent kids, little old ladies and now... Evil Babies: The new frontier. I guess?

-The whole pre-credit sequence is quite traumatizing, actually. Well done, show. *shivers*
Photo 1

-Home for rent? Is that a common sign to see in the US? You have to hunt down rentals with a crossbow and chloroform around here.
Photo 2

-Oh, they all moved. Very sane and logical choice, since the info on Monster Facebook will now be out of date until the next thing comes at you and updates it's status as 'getting ass kicked by Dean Winchester at 2345 Plum Tree Lane' or wherever it is.

-HI TRUNK!!! HI!!! *waves*

Photo 3

-New house, but it's the same house layout as her first house in Cicero, the one with the changelings. Staircase configuration is very familiar.

-Baby's gone. Well, the baby didn't pull the mom out from under the bed, so maybe it's a changeling kind of situation again, with shifters doing some kind of swap in for the actual baby? But in that case, the baby should be there, but be the swapped-in baby. Hm. [In retrospect: Ew.]

-Don't go missing in Lansing, Michigan. Their missing posters are incredibly ineffectual. Date of disappearance? Vital statistics? Phone number to call? Have they issued an Amber alert?
Photo 4

-[Ooo. Retrospectively telling bit. Sam revers to the missing baby as 'it' even with a gender-specific name on the poster. Ah hah hah. At some point in time when my head isn't exploding I might ponder that.]

-Written by Adam Glass, directed by John F. Showalter. Recognize Showalter, not recalling Glass.

-Hee! Samuel vs the laptop. Considering when he died computers were room-sized things or stuff from sci-fi, he should have a rather epic digital divide from the rest of the world.

-"Either way, it's baby stew. Which is bad." *snerk* [But Sam already called the baby 'it'... hm.]

-Ben and guns. Bound to happen. Surprised it didn't before now with the cannon Dean's keeping under the bed, and seriously, Dean, you didn't properly close the Impala's trunk?? [Or Ben stole the keys and unlocked it himself. Dean's concept of key-hiding is rather woeful.]
Photo 5

-"I can do what you do." Yep. Wee Hunter wannabe Ben. He's a kid, and he's wearing a military-themed t-shirt, and he knows monsters are real, and he knows you hunt them. If I was Ben and twelve I'd be crawling into the trunk and stowing away. Of coure I was a moron when I was 12.

-Sam's car has a spoiler. The vehicular kind. I find this greatly amusing.
Photo 6

-The babies are all 6 months old. Again with the six months. Must be something to that. I know from way back in the "what did yellow-eyes do to baby!Sammy?" days research, that 6 months is generally the age a baby starts to become aware that the world is not part of them. Or something like that.

-Dean's lying to Lisa. Badly. Still. Not sure why. Also, randomly, bubblegum pink stucco wall. Not sure why on that either. The front side of the house was nice and brown wood colours, but back 'round the garage, bubblegum pink stucco. It may be the headache talking, but there might be meta in that. On the surface presented to the public, traditional and respectable, but on the more hidden surfaces, weird-coloured and lumpy. Yeah, sounds like a typical metaphor for any family. *nods*
Photo 7

Photo 8

-I have "Sam sad muppet-face" in my notes and I cannot find it anywhere for capping. I suspect hallucinations.

-Why would he bring a silver knife. Well, a lot of things respond that way to silver, I guess. [Or they knew they were after a shifter. Just maybe.]

-Arg, sound de-synched on the broadcast, driving me nuts. However, Dean still has an awesome WTF face.
Photo 9

-Did Sam say, "Welcome to the party, Gutenberg"? What does any of this have to do with the invention of the printing press? [After googling, I still can't make the reference make sense, unless it's some kind of reference to "Three Men and a Baby" in which case they're a man short.]

-How to protect your home and family from monsters: The Dean Winchester crash course. Of course she's got to know about the symbol painting and salting doors and windows since she's watched Dean doing all this crazy crap to her house over the past year, and the permanent symbol stuff probably all got painted or etched before the moving truck got to the new place. Hopefully Lisa immediately goes out for target practice after he leaves and possibly some gun safety lessons. And has some nice long chats with Bobby. Sometime after she gets dressed.
Photo 10

-"If you don't walk out that door, I'm gonna shoot you." GO LISA!!! \o/
Photo 11

-Oh that baby is totally evil. Seriously, look at that face.
Photo 12

-Baby care and Dean. Grocery shopping for baby stuff. I'm just gonna say 'bwahahaha' and keep going. [And screencaps.]
Photo 13

Photo 14

Photo 15

Photo 16

Photo 17

[Is it just me or does it look like Sam (or more likely Jared) is trying not to bust out laughing in that last cap?]

-Bobby John. Everyone together now? AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!! (who picked which?) [Dean picked Bobby, Sam picked John. Awwwwww.]

-Pft. Hi! I'm a random stranger who wants to not only touch your child but change its diapers. Hell no, lady, and I don't care if you're a monster or not. No way in hell.
Photo 18

-To misquote a million lolcats: Oh crap, it's a mandroid. GET IN THE CAR!!!! [And now noting the baby is not facing the camera there. Handy that.]
Photo 19

-Super Valu might also be an American chan, but that's a Canadian sign configuration for them. At least it wasn't an Overwaitea. That would have been a big 'you aren't filming in the US' signpost right there.
Photo 20

-Hm. Given the uniform shirt the shifter is wearing is clean, poor dead police officer here can't have been wearing it when his throat was cut. That's... oddly disturbing.
Photo 21

-Ha! Dean with the booze onna finger trick. Usually for teething and I suppose not exactly approved of these days, but it's very Deanish.

-And Sam gets confirmation of shifter babies. Also ew.

-Baby's first shifter!splode! HAHAHAH! I wonder how long certain people involved in the show *koffKripkekoff* have been trying to find some legitimate justifiable way within the plot to have a baby explode on a national network? This also explains the 6 months thing. Shifter babies don't teethe, they moult. Explosively. But what about the ones we've seen that were probably raised by humans? Surely an exploding shape-shifting baby would alert the parents that something was weird. Unless... ooo, very cool monster design. See, it's like an innate chameleon thing! The baby just shifted to more closely match the appearance of the last shifter that touched it. It must be an automatic thing that they grow out of in time. Shifter kids that haven't been collected like the one in Skin and shifter!Drac and are raised among bog-standard humans don't have this problem because they don't come in contact with other shifters, and therefore they don't start shifting autonomously until puberty or something. Yeah. Makes sense. *nods*
Photo 22

-Baby's bigger too, I think. [...Or maybe the baby mimicked the one on the package of diapers? ...Random googling says kids don't usually match pictures to objects until about 18 months, but who knows how fast a shifter!baby's cognitive development goes? I still like my theory better. Even though I think the baby is the same baby as the one on the diaper box, I say chameleon tendencies, because mimicking kids off diaper packs would tip off normal human parents. Or it's another post-apocalypse monster rule change, and that's why the shifters are gathering up the cuckoo kids. *handwaves*]
Photo 23

-Hey, it's that wall! Someone was tracking when that setpiece was used. I forget who. (I haven't noticed the spiky clock yet, [livejournal.com profile] eilonwy, have you?)
Photo 24

-[Yah know, offhand thought, I think the silver knives they've been swinging around are actually switchblades, or at least folding blades. That's a hell of a niche market. There's an official silver Swiss Army knife, though... although I think the ones the boys are using are a simpler blade-only design. It would be possible to take the steel blade out and pop in a silver one, I suppose. Still, as I said, niche market. Someone's making some cash among hunters selling those. *nods*]

-"I'm a freaking headcase!" Ah, Dean. Know thyself. *pats*

-Crap, Samuel and the cousins have a compound? That's alarming. Wondering where they keep the live captures now. Eek.
Photo 25

-"Aren't you the best disguise a monster ever wore?" Cousin... uh... I'm sorry I've forgotten her name. Anyway, she is really really creepy.
Photo 26

-Nooooo. No letting scary grandpa/cousin people touch the baby.
Photo 27

-Raise him. Yep. *ticks spoiler off* Considering how matter-of-fact Samuel is about all this, I'd say this isn't the first time for it. *looks suspiciously at the Cousins again*

-"Your mind goes right to torture, Dean. Don't assume that for everyone." Ooo. Burn. Not surprising he knows considering hunters had known and spending four months dead and coming back tends to make people curious... but the torturing thing... Sam, I do believe you have some explaining to do?

-"Congrats. It's a boy. Sometimes." Giving a baby of any kind to the creepiest cousin? Oh this is all SO wrong.
Photo 28

-I gotta say, I love the little baby actor. Look at the facial expression!
Photo 29

-Hi parent!shifter! And looking like Samuel already? How do shifters take templates, don't they need contact, or to have met the target, and keep them alive? Or is this part of the Post-apocalypse New World Order "monster rules break all to smash" thing?
Photo 30

-Aw, the cool quiet cousin got his neck broken. Dammit! He was the only one I really liked. Although if he's maybe a former monster-baby too, maybe a broken neck is totally dealable. Maybe he'll repop. Maybe.

Photo 31

-Darts and silver nets. Live capture again. Grandpa, what are you up to?
Photo 32

-Ejecting the darts. Okay... I guess it makes sense a shifter could do that, but I'm guessing it's a parent!shifter thing.

-"I'm going up, stay with the baby." Sam. Dude. Are you an idiot? There is a shape-shifter and you want to leave the safe room alone? Sam, you utter mor- whups, never mind, parent!shifter's here.
Photo 33

-New thing! No splat shift! And a shift including clothing, since I hadn't clued into that before. And an excuse to have Jensen play evil, which he really should do more often. Just sayin'.

Photo 34

-Why did it leave Dean alive? (aside from the obvious 'script says so') Hm. Interesting.

-Alpha monster! King shifter! Yay! Myth! Tons of lore we haven't heard before! Whee! \o/

-...although the implications that maybe they're gonna retcon everything and have God be Alpha of angels and Lucifer be pushing to be Alpha demon and death as Alpha reaper and... um. Hrm lots of implications. Also, since I'm reeeeeally medicated right now and between spikes of headache... since their ancestors were decapitating vampires on the Mayflower, is there an Alpha hunter? Orion? Cernunnos? Diana? Loads of them out there. Just a thought. Blaming the meds.

-Newsflash! Sam still sucks at lying.
Photo 35

-"It killed three of my people." Wait. Three people? He only lost one of the three cousins though? Ohhhhh right, the two on the gate. Just like poor cousin Leonard last episode, we hardly knew yah. At all. ...Hunh. It killed the gate guards with no noise, and yet did not kill the barking dog we never saw that tipped off the gang there was something inbound. Hunh. Weirdness abounds. Maybe the dog was a recording? Yeah. *handwaves*

-Oh, hey, who's Grandpa on the phone with? Has he got a Sponsor? One who wants Alphas? One who probably resurrected a few people by nefarious means? Ooo.

-And then I lost all my other notes except for GAAAH GIANT SPIDER CRAWLING UP THE WALL BEHIND THE TV! for a while...

-"You're not a construction worker." Go away but come back sometime. Yep. I like Lisa. I expect she'll be back during a future crisis.
Photo 36

Brilliant catch with the baby shifter shifting into the baby on the diaper box! I never noticed! I loved the splatter when he shifted though. Awesome.

I think the creepy chick cousin is called Glenn. Campbell. Oh hold on, actually maybe it's Gwen. And of all the Campbells to kill it had to be the best one!

Totally loved Lisa in this episode. Yes, why can't hunters have a family and a hunting life too? Christian obviously has if he and his girl (who is probably a zombie or a giant spider (heh) or something) are trying to have babies!

Now while Jensen does evil brilliantly, I have to say it's Evil!Sam who always manages to float my boat!

I liked this ep. Starting to feel like SN again.

Hope your headache goes away soon!

[identity profile] babelmira.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Glenn. Campbell.

and if you're a Scot over 30, you'll be giggling insanely at the images that conjures up and wondering what hilarity Paladin will cause.

Gods Below, I so want Sam's car.

[identity profile] irismay42.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah! I think I should have spelt it "Glen Campbell" as I meant the Wichita Lineman guy, not the Scottish broadcaster!
bellatemple: (SPN - a little crazy)

[personal profile] bellatemple 2010-10-03 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam and Dean called the babies "it" throughout the entire episode, as did, I think, Samuel, and it DROVE ME UP THE FREAKING WALL. Dean did it well before he knew the kid was a shifter, too. My idea is that children under the age of, like, 7, are so rare in the Winchester experience that they're utterly alien and thus "its" -- eeeeeeeeexcept Lisa has a baby niece, apparently. Does Dean call his girlfriend's baby niece "it"? Does Lisa hit him? Things to think about.

There were many ways that this plot totally didn't actually work. Why did the "alpha" shifter turn into Samuel, Sam, and Dean? Why didn't it kill them (especially Dean)? Oh, and hey, how about all that casually handled rape by fraud that happened six months ago. That's fun.

On the other hand: Dean with a baby! Yay! (And why did I find it especially heartwarming when he was holding and protecting a non-caucasian baby? Hmm.)
bellatemple: (Default)

[personal profile] bellatemple 2010-10-03 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, I can totally do math. . . .

But you make a good point about the "it" thing, though they establish that the baby they have on hand is male (at the time) pretty quickly.

Also, I've noticed that all the shifters we see seem to primarily identify as male. It's interesting, in a context of gender theory, though I don't feel qualified to really theorize much about it.
bellatemple: (Default)

[personal profile] bellatemple 2010-10-06 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but I'm not just talking about biological structure on that front. I'm talking about how they appear to identify, genderwise.

That, of course, may be an over simplification of the issue, one influenced not just by our cultural insistence upon a gender binary, but also by the Winchesters being our primary POV and them seeming to (iirc) identify shifters as male. . . .
bellatemple: (Default)

[personal profile] bellatemple 2010-10-06 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that! And how much of the way they appear to identify is based on the fact that they're presented as active, and our media tends towards differentiating between the active male and the passive female (okay, so I read sociological images, a lot)?

And hey, on that topic, we do get some nice, driven, motivated women on this show. They're usually conniving, manipulative, and evil, but they're often proactive. . . .

[identity profile] borgmama1of5.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Don't go missing in Lansing, Michigan. Their missing posters are incredibly ineffectual."

I love you for this bit of snark :)

You should write your reviews heavily medicated all the time...Although, considering some of the details you caught, you are probably even more deadly when coherent :)

[identity profile] ciaranbochna.livejournal.com 2010-10-03 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I am feeling the need to lock all the cousins in a room and interrogate them, or someone should. That one cousin--we can't remember her name--just..wrong. I also flailed everywhere when the Impala came out (so did mom). I am with you pondering why Dean was left alive, and Sam is such an awful liar, yes.

Hope your migraine has dissapated somewhat.

Hugs

(I haven't noticed the spiky clock yet, [info]eilonwy, have you?)
Alas, no. :( I miss my spiky clock! Since I asked at VanCon about said spiky clock, and they were filming episode 6 at the time, I'm going to watch even more for it starting episode 7... Heh.

And the female cousin is "Gwen". The males were Mark and Christian, I think, but I don't know which was which, nor which kicked it. I'm hoping that the rapid demolition of cousins means there'll be none left by sweeps... is that wrong of me?

(Also, I may have started collecting supplies with which to make a wee!spiky!clock for the yarn!chesters. Maybe. Y'know. Possibly.)

Yes, we have houses for rent in the US a lot, especially since the housing market tanked. 40 years ago, when my father married my stepmother we rented out my old house for a year because it wasn't selling. So, it's not an uncommon thing.

Considering only Dean, Castiel, the Angels and Bobby knew Sam broke the last seal and drank demon blood and yet we had 2 groups of hunters who knew and came after Sam for doing it so I don't think we can be sure the Campbells found out from Sam about Dean's stint as a torturer in Hell. Once Lucifer was out, the story of the "breaking of the seals" probably spread like wildfire and the Campbells seem like the type of hunters who get whatever information they can out of anything supernatural that they capture. I'm giving Sam the benefit of the doubt here.

[identity profile] percysowner.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
As an admitted Sam lover, when I saw that look my first thought was now everyone is going to think Sam told. I thought the look was guilt on not being able to make Christian shut up about what he knew and guilt about the entire Apocalypse disaster. Dean's torturing in Hell led to Sam breaking the final seal and resulted directly from Sam being alive when he should have died. I suspect Sam feels great guilt about Dean breaking the seal and is entirely discomforted by any mention of Dean's time in Hell. But like I said, I tend to give Sam the benefit of the doubt. The show rarely does.

[identity profile] spacefarer.livejournal.com 2010-10-04 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Enjoyed your review, as always.

Loved Dean with the baby. Loved Lisa--she has been great in both eps. I know that we were all waiting for Dean to hit the road again, but I'm really glad Dean gets to keep the relationship. I think it's been fantastic for him; he has definitely matured.

Interesting idea on the six-month mention, that it's when a shifter baby first shifts, instinctively. Apparently, unlike other shifters we've seen, the Alpha doesn't need contact with the person he shifts into. (In "Skin," the shifter seemed to be born to two normal human parents. Is this latest a retcon?) It may be he's so old, he doesn't have his original form anymore and just shifts into whomever he's facing (psychological advantage?). And, yeah, Sam definitely should not have gone off alone!

Hunters found out about Sam when the demon in 5.03 told some of them, and they passed it on. But not even Bobby knew about the breaking of the first seal. And when Walt and Roy came for Sam, they had no interest in offing Dean until he figured out who they were. So it doesn't appear that anyone else knew about what had happened in Hell. Besides, I'm assuming JP knows what he's doing--and he definitely had Sam looking guilty when Christian first started talking. So, yep, I think it was Sam (and based on Gwen's line last week about Sam going on and on about Dean, coupled with the cousins' attitude toward Dean, it doesn't seem that Sam talked Dean up, does it?), until the show tells us otherwise.

I know exactly what you mean about the description on the tv. When I used to go to play the ep I'd cover my eyes and have the kids start it so I couldn't speed read through the description. LOL

And I noticed Sam's use of "it" pretty quickly cause it was so disappointing. Not suprising though.

And the Impala love made me tingly. Ha.

I wonder what Dodger_winslow thought of the whole thing. She had a very in depth fic (WIP) called Skin Deep that was all about a kid shifter and wee!Dean&Sam. I don't think she ever finished it though.

"Two and a Half Men." ...seriously? That show gives me hives.

You and me both. And yet it's one of the most popular American shows on Australian television. Weird.

since the info on Monster Facebook will now be out of date until the next thing comes at you and updates it's status as 'getting ass kicked by Dean Winchester at 2345 Plum Tree Lane' or wherever it is.

OMG! Monster Facebook! Can you imagine the ads?

Sam revers to the missing baby as 'it' even with a gender-specific name on the poster.

That might just be a "young-man-without-much-experience-of-babies" thing. Babies tend to look androgynous (and bald) and I noticed among my male college students a tendency to use non-gender-specific language even when they knew a baby's sex. (Then there's the one student still insists on asking after my nephew as 'Yoda' when we meet.)

Of coure I was a moron when I was 12.

As are most twelve-year-olds. Complete with feelings of immortality. That's why you keep them away from guns!

After googling, I still can't make the reference make sense, unless it's some kind of reference to "Three Men and a Baby" in which case they're a man short

This would make Sam Tom Selleck. Ted Danson didn't arrive until much later in the movie. And at least they didn't namecheck Charlie and Alan. (God, how do I know those are the names of the men in Two and a Half Men? Are those their names?)

I'm a random stranger who wants to not only touch your child but change its diapers. Hell no, lady, and I don't care if you're a monster or not.

Maybe it's a small-town Australia thing, but I quite often end up holding the babies or playing with the children of people I don't know when in parks. I exude 'trust-worthy, child-friendly' vibes!

Samuel and the cousins have a compound? That's alarming. Wondering where they keep the live captures now.

So bloody disturbing!

I love Lisa. And the unveiling of the Impala. Hey, Dean's girlfriend is as cool and tough as his "baby". He has a definite type.

I'm struggling a wee bit with Samuel. Partly because he's so obviously up to something and Sam doesn't seem to be worried about it. Dean is, but Sam's bought into the "family" thing, but he never even met pre-resurrection Samuel - and surely he should be more worried about someone brought back from the dead? I can't wait til we get the back story of what Sam's been up to in the missing year and why the hell he's bought the Campbell family thing. They're a cult, Sammy! Get out of there! No drinking the Kool-Aid!

Plus, Grandpa looks too much like Skinner. At least Cousin Christian doesn't look too much like Stargate's Jonas Quinn.
