Introductory Picspam for Sherlock
(sort of for the Supernatural Fan, but not really)
This isn't a thorough introduction, and doesn't even begin to explain how fantastic this show is. I hope you'll check it out, it's airing on PBS stations in the US starting today (already aired in some timezones, but PBS usually has a repeat airing during the week). If you can track down the original airing, I'd suggest it, as there may be cuts in the US airing due to time and whatnot.
Contains screencaps from all three episodes of Sherlock, so character and scene spoilers, although I've tried to avoid directly plot-related ones, but mind your step. And deepest apologies, but I seem to have lost the attributions on the two gifs, so if they're yours, let me know and I will add credit.
This is Sherlock Holmes (played by Benedict Cumberbatch). He has Season Two Sam hair, sort of, but on him it works.  His ability to observe things and draw correct conclusions from them might make it kind of seem like he's psychic, but he's absolutely not. This frequently freaks people around him out.    He's very scientifically-oriented.  This frequently freaks people out.  He doesn't smile much but sometimes he does. This also freaks people out.   He only truly smiles on rare occasions, around certain people.  He has a wonderfully swishy coat.  He's arrogant and inclined towards disrespecting police officials.  Speaking of Police Officials, this is Detective Inspector Lestrade (played by Rupert Graves). He's kind of Bobby-ish. And a silver fox. And a BAMF.  He's with Scotland Yard. He needs Sherlock. (Not like that. Unless you're reading about 10% of the fanfic.)   He's got a team of investigators who are probably quite competant. Except for Anderson, for whom there seems to be no excuse.  This is Mrs. Hudson (Played by Una Stubbs). She's like Bobby too, except not so much with the research. But she is awesome.  She's Sherlock's landlady, not his housekeeper, which she reiterates every time she makes tea and brings biscuits and tsks over the state of the place and hides Sherlock's skull, but that's okay, he really doesn't talk to it as much after John moves in. (We'll be getting to him later. John, that is, not the skull.)   She's also one of the few people Sherlock Holmes seems to hug.  This is [name withheld due to spoiler] (played by Mark Gatiss (who is also one of the showrunners. With this role, he has officially scored the biggest fanboy coup ever by not only being part of a team that brings his fandom a new variation on canon, but plays a notable role in said new variation, and not just a cameo background appearance like other fannish showrunners.)). He is Sherlock's self-professed arch-enemy.   He's the most dangerous man John Watson has ever met according to Sherlock.  He can also rock the hell out of an umbrella.  He and Sherlock don't get along. (See also arch-enemy.)   But he worries about Sherlock, constantly. And he likes being an enigmatic bastard. Just like Sherlock.  In this show there are murders.  This excites Sherlock. Which also freaks most people out.  Most people except John Watson. Bringing us to John.  This is Dr. John Watson (played by Martin Freeman). He would have Dean hair if he used gel.  He's    He has a blog. (One that's actually online, and integrated into the show, but if you haven't seen the series yet, don't go there or to Sherlock's Science of Deduction site and other associated sites unless you want to run the risk of being entirely spoiled.) Until he meets Sherlock, he doesn't have a lot to write about.  He wears clothes that make him look 80 years old...  ...or like a cuddly teddy bear...  ...or like... I don't know what. Some kind of imprisoned mime. But this particular shirt already has its own small fanbase so it's obviously working for him.  He's got issues as a result of being in a warzone.  But once he meets Sherlock they don't seem to be much of a problem anymore.  He has a few unusual skills for a doctor which I won't go into due to spoilers. (Is being a BAMF a skill?) Let's just say a lot of them sum up to being able to cope with Sherlock Holmes as a flatmate.   Didn't I mention they share a flat (for the British-impaired, that's an apartment)?   No, they aren't sharing it like that. Although almost everyone they meet thinks they are.   And the topic keeps being brought up. Occasionally by John or Sherlock.   But really, they're just flatmates. (Unless you're reading about 70% of the fanfic.)   Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Together, they fight crime. Or more accurately Sherlock solves crimes and freaks the hell out of most average people and John keeps him from assorted forms of self-destruction, asks the questions that need to be asked, chases around after him and writes everything down in his blog. But in a badass sort of way.  |

I've got a few fics up myself, but some have references to episodes yet to be aired on US stations.
The websites are the official character-blog websites put up by the BBC. Since the entire series has aired in the UK, the sites are right loaded with spoilers. Watching changes get made based on events in the episodes was quite awesome. Here is the index page for them, but seriously, loaded with spoilers, beware!

And Watson has always been adorable. But I don't think Holmes has been as absolutely sweet as Cumberbatch makes him. Nor Lestrade as cool.

When I first read the stories way back in junior high/high school, Holmes always struck as a rude bastard. I liked Watson more.
Brett was my fave Holmes, as the way he played Holmes, he played Holmes as not really knowing how rude and abrupt he was.
I think Cumberbatch is doing the same, in a way. For all the smarts Sherlock has, he struck me as being a little bit clueless about social interaction sometimes.

Exactly. He doesn't mean to be rude and arrogant - he just doesn't quite understand the way we lesser mortals work. (A bit like Sheldon on Big Bang Theory.) He's adorable!

Yep, totally. Coming back after Reichenbach was the direct result of the fans sending the magazine letters. First ever series renewal and character resurrection based on fan activity.

Also in an era where writing such things could get the writer in very serious legal trouble due to certain laws, and not laws that had anything to do with intellectual property rights.

Oh, they showed a clip for next week, where Sherlock is shooting the wall, barefoot in PJs and robe. I couldn't help but to notice that Cumberbatch has nice feet.

Had a really fun experience watching the Brett Holmes once; the soundtrack was about 10 seconds off from the picture-track. But the closed captioning was on time with the picture track. It was really weird, like something out of Doctor Who was happening in the Holmes-verse.

I love it too, because Angelo is so happy and supportive that Sherlock's got a date without being over the top about it, and it's a little moment of someone genuinely caring about Sherlock as a person.

I absolutely loved the first scene with Mycroft, personally. "You're going to stay. Your left hand tells me that." And poor John gets this *look* like he's not sure he wants to know, but he has to ask anyway.

It's going to be airing on PBS in North America soon as well, check your local listings, and hopefully it won;t be too far different from the UK version this time around.
