Random: News Report on Vancouver

Man, I really hope the show isn't doing any location shoots in the downtown Vancouver area right now.

Power's out in downtown Vancouver

Apparently there was an underground explosion and fire. No huge destruction or stuff like that, it's not a major disaster, but the power's out.

According to the news, this happened at 9 AM this morning and it took 12 hours to clear the fumes from the area for BC Hydro (power company) to get in and assess the situation. A major line of 14 cables has to be completely replaced. They estimate two or three days to get power back. About 3000 customers are out including huge office buildings, hotels, and apartments, I think they said on the news, as well as water pumps, traffic signals, and the electric trolley lines for parts of the transit system are all out.

Seriously though, the downtown Vancouver area's going to be a truly scary place (more so than usual) tonight and for the next few nights while they're in the dark. I hope anyone who's there is okay and keeps safe.

Yeah, it's a good time to not be in Vancouver :-) I didn't think there was much of a chance, especially with the budget being cut. I'm thinking city shoots are more expensive than the rest of the lower mainland.

Yeah, they are. Crews are apparently made to pay through their nose and forfeit limbs to get parking. (If they don't have to park anything, I think it's quite affordable.)

Heh. Let's see. Small city Vancouver Island transit. Buses about every half hour on most routes, but allow at absolute minimum a fifteen minute window from the time on the schedule to when they actually arrive, early or late. Also, most routes shut down at 6pm, and the rest shut down at 9pm.

It's okay as long as you don't have a scheduled day where you have to be anywhere at any particular time. I've had to give up trying to make it work as a practical transporation system entirely though. :-P

You have a point. That is worse, though the fifteen minute window rule applies perfectly to the route I live on and which enables me to get to work every day. *sigh* Most Vancouver buses go through a twenty minute ± ten minute cycle. The only really good thing is that they run late.

Don't blame you. I'm gradually developing paranoia about my own. (The Bus God is out to get me. >>)

Ours frequently run early, which is a real pain. If you are wanting to transfer to a different bus at any point that isn't a timing point, you pretty much have to get the driver of your bus to confirm the arrival time of the other bus with it's driver, or you have no hope of catching it. :-P
