Poll: Language usage, really. Very srs bznz. *nods*
Okay. I need to know.
When is 'next Thursday'?
I know, I know, 'Not soon enough' et cetera, but I mean, is 'Next' Thursday considered to be the next day named Thursday or the one the week after the next day named Thursday?
So looking at it from today being the 22nd of September...

(No spoilers please!!!! :-D)

So, long story short, if you want me to be somewhere on a given day, specify the date. :-D

... and now its possible Thursday is confusing me. Maybe Castiel will save me, since Thursday is his day...

Regardless, exact dates rule. :-)

It depends on what day of the week it is. Friday through Sunday, "next Thursday" is the nearest one. Monday through Thursday, "next Thursday" is the one in the following week. Also, if I'm referring to "next Thursday" and want to make sure I'm talking about the one over a week away, I'll often extend the 'n' and put a bit more stress on "next" in general. That could just be me though.
Why is this important?
Oh, and THURSDAY! \O.O/
Re: Studied linguistics
It came to mind today because I saw a post that said something about the US election hijacking the airwaves being "next Thursday" and I thought they were talking about the 25th of September, but they weren't, and it brought to mind a couple occasions where people were discussing when to shedule meetings and so forth and having great long involved 'Who's On First?' style conversations as a result about when 'next xday' was and people getting frustrated. So I did a poll to see if it was just me or if there was a more general variance of opinion. And also to be silly.
I think from now on, since it seems to be about 50/50, I'll be referring to specific dates whenever possible. :-/
Re: Studied linguistics
Ah. I get it now. You were worried you'd have to wait two weeks until the next episode. This is understandable. ^.^ Words like "this" and "next" and "there" are some of the most confusing. I won't go into why, because if you thought I was bad before…. Heheh."Who's On First?" routines are always fun in hindsight, though. Or is that just me, too?
Sounds like a plan. :)

I'm kind of surprised at how dead even the poll is. I figured I was either wrong or right, but it looks like it's an either/or kind of thing. I'm thinking it might be regional or generational. The result of the poll seems to be pointing towards 'just use the damned date' :-D
